A flamethrower is a weapon which emits a stream of fire, burning everything in its path. This weapon has been available in every GTA to date. People hit by the fire will burn to death, although players can survive an attack with a flamethrower since GTA III when they have sufficient health. You can complete the Firefighter mission to become fire proof and thus completely eliminate the threat of the weapon.
In the classic GTA's, you will most surely die when you're on fire. The only way to escape death is by swimming in Grand Theft Auto or picking up Invulnerability* in GTA2.
